Darren on 10 News Australia:
Reporter: When Darren Hayes stepped off the plane from San Francisco this morning it was an emotional homecoming. Just three weeks ago he dropped a clanger on the music world announcing that the hugely successful band Savage Garden was no more. It was an announcement that even took former band mate Daniel Jones by surprise.
Darren: and I understand that a lot of our fans you know were absolutely shocked and I'm sure he was shocked to read it in the paper but it was his idea.
Reporter: And it wasn't a new idea.
Darren: You know what it is? Daniel left the band ya know 2 years ago we all knew it, everyone that works with us knows it um it was a difficult decision that he made that I dealt with. Back then you know I didn't want the band to be over but it took me a lot of soul searching to kinda stand on my feet and say well who am I without Savage Garden.
Reporter: And who he is is Darren Hayes solo artist. He's here too shoot the video clip for his first single Insatiable which will be out before Christmas, followed by the album Spin out next year.
Darren: Its a totally different side too me, I mean I look completely different obviously, I'll be singing and dancing and just kinda living it up I guess.
Reporter: He plans to spend at least 2 years promoting this album refusing to assume that his success with Savage Garden will automatically be repeated.
Darren: I am very humble about it, I feel like I'm a brand new artist.
Reporter: Meantime the wounds from the bitter ending to the friendship and partnership with Daniel look like they'll take a while to heal.
(to Darren) You'll always be friends?
Darren: Yeah I'm sure we will be (laughs)
Reporter: Are you at the moment?
Darren: I haven't talked to him for a long time to be honest. I'm sure it'll take a while before we can hang out and you know chat about what's up but I wish him all the best.
